Welcome to Scale Hill

Nestled at the head of Crummock Water, Scale Hill is an Original Lakeland Coaching Inn. Built in 1620, we have welcomed travellers and adventurers for over 400 years. The same family have run Scale Hill Hotel since 1930, and Heather Thompson is the third generation of her family to run the business. We hope you have a very happy stay with us!

Our History

In the course of our history, Scale Hill has welcomed many outstanding figures in the history of Art, Literature and Science. She has hosted Writers, Artists, Musicians, Entertainers, Movie Stars, Political Thinkers and Politicians, Abolitionists, and many others.

The story of her ownership and the history of her survival is a fascinating and wide-ranging one, touching the lives of those who served alongside Admiral Lord Nelson to the wealthy Victorian Industrialist John Marshall and Slave Abolitionists Harriet Martineau and William Wilberforce.

Sustainability

Living in a remote area of natural beauty, we are always trying to find ways to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment around us.

Biomass - Our heating & hot water system is run by a Biomass Boiler that is powered on WoodChip Pellets, sourced sustainably and delivered by a local company every few weeks.

Water - The water in our taps is safe to drink. The Spring flows from Low Fell across the fields and through our UV Water Filter before reaching our taps. This Spring has supplied Scale Hill for over 100 years, but our UV Filter is new!

Towels - We are very happy to supply you with new Towels during your stay. If you require fresh towels please put your used linen in the bath/shower for us to collect.

Noble Isle - You will find a selection of Noble Isle toiletries in your bathroom for you to use during your stay. All of their products are made using 100% natural extracts which are sourced and made within the UK. All packaging is recyclable, and they will be moving to supplying their products in glass bottles and jars later in 2022. We kindly ask that you leave the products for us to refill for future guests to use.

Drying Room - We have a very cosy drying room available for all guests to use. This is in the annexe, over the cobbled coach yard. You can leave muddy boots and wet coats over there to dry.
